Jet Jeyson

Jet Jeyson
You could hear the thuds from pretty far. They were pretty loud and frequent, but also generally followed by the sound of a bunch of small but heavy metal pieces falling to the ground. The few other people in the training area would sometimes flinch at the noise, to both the pain it implied if they had been on the receiving end of it and the general aggressive noisiness of it all. Jet didn’t care of course; he was practicing the use of his weapon, trying to boost the strength output of his moves. He was grumbling, because he was hitting a wall – literally and figuratively.

His weapon was heavy, he knew that, and that helped in dealing the most damage possible out of his attacks. But it was also heavy to the point where he felt like he lost in manoeuverability unless he used his semblance. Long winded fights would also tire his arm after a while, which would reduce his ability to swing the long chain with the usual strength. So he wasn’t sure what do to, leave it heavy and powerful, or find a way to reduce the weight to gain in control but lose is power output? He didn’t really want a compromise, a “in between” sort of solution, it didn’t feel like evolution to him if he gained something only to lose something else, so he was trying to find ways around it without modifying the weapon, like new ways to manipulate it.

He had pretty good control already, he knew that, but he lacked in quick attacks at short range as well as speed in the long attacks. He already had an idea for the quick short range attacks, but it would require a good amount of modification to his weapon’s structural design, so he wasn’t going to work on that yet. Still, a part of those modifications would help his weight problem by putting holes in the various blades, so maybe there wasn’t a problem at all in the end? No no no, there was a problem, the weight would go down and he would lose in power output, which was a problem to him. He like the loudness of the thuds he was creating now, he didn’t want that to change.

Sighing, the black haired guy reeled in his weapon, looking at the target on the far wall of the training range. “Well, I know the holes are going to be a thing, might as well make them now and find a way around it after.

Jet picked up his things and made his way to the workshop to work on the blades, thinking about possible solutions on the way. “Maybe if I just make the tips bigger? But if only the tip is heavy, the rest of the chain will require bigger movements to modify the momentum and I will have even less control than I have now… Only other thing I can think of would be to make all the blades slightly bigger, but that would require I change the bracer’s mechanism entirely to accommodate the size change and I’m not willing to go that way…

Jet had one of his rare serious look on his face, concentrating very hard on the subject with his face downward, looking toward his feet as he walked. People would look at him weird as he was talking to himself out loud in the corridors. Suddenly, his head snapped back up with a look of pure excitement. “More blades!? Wait wait… no no no no… I can’t solve everything with more blades… beside that makes no sense it’d be even harder to control…” His sudden outburst surprised a few students who then proceeded to laugh at him a little. Jet was completely oblivious to it though… that and he didn’t care, he had more urgent matters at hand.

He pierced the holes in the blades. It wasn’t a hard process but it took a lot of time for each hole to make sure the structural integrity of the blades stayed the same. He knew his aura would protect the weapon from wear and damage, but he still didn’t want to create any form of weakness to the blades where they could break if he wasn’t careful. The holes were sized to fit his finger easily so he could grab on the blades. That would help his close range tremendously. Once he had them detachable though it would be even better since he would be able to hit someone with them in close quarter combat or even throw them like daggers. Still, at the moment, it gave him a hold that allowed him more precise movements without having to move his whole arm. Why he didn’t do that before he didn’t know, but now it was done.

Still, it didn’t change the fact that now, his weapon was lighter and had less of an impact. He tried it in the workshop’s test area and he could confirm that the damage he dealt with his longer attacks was reduced, but his closer ones were actually stronger since he didn’t need as big a movement to get the full speed on his attacks. That part was a good outcome, not unexpected but nice to confirm.

Scratching his head, he went back to the work table. Picking up his phone, he called his boss. Or well… she didn’t pay him, was she his boss? His… mentor? Bah, whatever, he called Peri.

Do you freaking know what time it is?” The little faunus sounded a bit mad.

Ehm…” Looking at the clock, Jet realised he had been at it for hours and it was now 2 am. “It’s noon somewhere in the Remnant.

Very funny… So now that I’m awake, why did you call?” Jet could almost see her yawn.

Explaining his dilemma, he waited for her to give her advice. She took a while thinking, mumbling a bit as she was trying to find a solution too with her half-awake mind, stopping suddenly when she realised something. “So what if it’s lighter? I understand that you want to deal as much damage in one shot as possible, but the way you talk it sounds like you’re using a blunt weapon. Forget about making it heavier, just make it cut more. Besides, with more control, it’s easier to aim for those soft spots on those Scorpions you keep facing.

It was so simple! He was so focused on not losing the power output that he forgot to think logically! While the loud thuds were satisfying, it was just for show in the end. So long as he focused on the weak points, he would actually deal more damage from the gain in precision. “Thanks boss! I apparently got tunnel vision for a while, I completely forgot that aspect!

Yeah yeah… Now for waking me up in the middle of the night for something that you should have thought yourself, you got inventory duty tomorrow. Good night.” She then hung up on him, but Jet didn’t care. Inventory duty sucked, it was super boring, but he was so hyped about his weapon that it didn’t even register.

Well, might as well make the angle of the edges sharper to make the blades cut easier!” With a smile, Jet took out a file and went to work for another few hours.
