The sun was setting, casting an orange glow over the blue leaves of Finnek Forest. The shadows grew long because of the setting sun, in which Kei was taking full advantage. He lay in the shadow of a tree, his black trench coat matching the color of the shadow, camouflaging him to the darkness. Kei was hidden atop a hill in the Forest, overlooking the ruins of an old human town. The city was fairly large, consisting of about 20 2-3 story buildings. These buildings were all far past their prime however, windows and doors all gone, portions of the wall blown, and some completely collapsed altogether. The town was located far beyond the usual patrol range of Hunters from Bellmuse and as such, this place rarely saw hunters, much less the average person.

Kei had heard rumors of a group simply called "The Exalted" having some kind of activity in this town. It was a group he had once had many encounters with in the past, encounters that were never on friendly terms. The Exalted were a band of mercenary's on the outside, but on the inside, a group that always had dark intentions, utilizing illegal methods to gain power. The Exalted often became enemies of his old employer's and as such, his as well. It's been a while since Kei heard anything from the group, leading him to believe that the group dissolved altogether. That was why the sudden rumor bugged him. Why have they disappeared for so long only to return now?

Using a pair of binoculars to scan the town, Kei watched for any kind of human movement. It was to no avail however, and it was just as deserted as it should have been. No people, no Exalted, no one.
It was only a rumor afterall... Kei sighed to himself, a bit annoyed that he had come all the way out here for what seemed to be a false alarm.

Grimms were creatures of the darkness and as such, could perfectly see through the blackness as though it was day. The setting sun was to their advantage; most preys could not see well during the night.

Two Deathstalkers crawled out of their caves to roam the forest. One was noticeably bigger than the other but both possessed intimidating scorpion-like characteristics with their hard bony plates, large pincers, and solid golden stingers.

The sight of a human from a distance stopped the two grimms in their tracks. Amidst the shadows, they could see its form - a human male of average built. The smaller scorpion decided to approach first while the bigger one stayed and hid behind a crowd of trees. As the first scorpion was at the right distance, it used its pincers to strike a tree and hurl it towards the human lying behind the shadow of a tree.

A sudden loud tearing of wood caught Kei's ear, causing him to turn his head to look for the origin of the noise. It was a Deathstalker tearing a tree out of the ground. Go figure. Kei only too well that the massive Grimm was on the verge of attacking him.

"Oi oi," Kei muttered to himself, "You've gotta be kidding me. This is terrible timing."

Suddenly, the Deathstalker flung the massive tree at him. Still laying on the ground, Kei made an attempt to roll to the side to avoid be crushed to deathh from the falling tree.
Shit shit shit Kei panicked as he rolled, the tree landing right next to him. Kei rolled to his feet, and the moment he did, he took off, charging at the Grimm. Kei didn't charge in a straight line however, and was weaving through trees, purposely making his path harder for the Grimm to determine. During his approach, the closer he got, Kei began to take a path in which the trees blocked the Deathstalkers line of sight of Kei.

Though Kei couldn't see the Deathstalker just as well as it couldn't see Kei, Kei had a general idea of where the Grimm was. Something that massive would make a lot of noise whenever it moved, constantly giving away its position. When Kei knew he got close enough, he popped out into open sight and charged right for the Deathstalker, hoping that he would have caught it by enough surprise that it wouldn't be able to react in time.

Kei jumped and came flying down on the Deathstalker. Kei came down foot first on the head of the monster scorpion, aiming for its eye. When he would land, he would continue to aim punches down on the eyes of the Deathstalker, intending to cripple it right off of the bat.

The Deathstalker saw the human had evaded the tree and was still in one piece. The scorpion planned to follow through with another attack but the boy was quick to get up and disappear from its sight, began weaving through the woods in blinding motion. The grimm tried to follow his movements based from the sounds alone,  as it attempted to face wherever the human was coming from but it wasn't enough. A strike to its eye caused the soft tissue to burst open and the scorpion to screech in pain. It reared back with intense speed upon instincts causing it to avoid the incoming barrage of punches that was aimed on the rest of its eyes. Not having a moment to spare, it spun around with tail outstretched hoping the catch the human with a strong tail whip.

The other grimm was still hidden behind the crowd of trees, waiting for a good opportunity to strike.

As the Deathstalker immediately brought its tail around Kei instinctively raised his arm to protect his body from taking the full of the attack. The tail slammed him, launching him off of the Deathstalker. His arms stung, but Kei didn't stop as he was flung back. As he was thrown off, Kei immediatly reach for his weighted wire, throwing the end of it towards the Deathstalkers claw.

The wire caught around the joint of where the claw connects to the arm of the Deathstalker's arm, and wrapped securely around it. As the wire reached its maximum length as Kei was being launched back, the wire would snag at this joint on the Grimm and Kei would avoid being thrown into a tree. At this same moment, Kei sent electricity running through his body into the highly conductive wire, and right into the Deathstalker.

Hoping that his semblance would momentarily stun the Deathstalker, Kei immediately charged right back at the Deathstalker. As he got closer, the Wire around the Deathstalkers joint loosened and automatically rectracted back into his belt. Kei once again struck eyes of the Deathstalker with the foot of his boot. He knew better now then to stick around like he did last time, and this time, Kei kicked off Deathstalker, jumping high into the sky.

Kei jumped over a sturdy tree branch and as he went over, he through one of the ends of his wire at the spot in the tail where the stinger connects to the main tail, causing the wire to wrap around it securely. As he went over the tree branch, the wire had choking effect on the this point on the tail. As Kei landed on the ground, he pulled the wire for added damage.

The Deathstalker could the see the wire going to its direction clearly in the dark but it could not comprehend well what it was for, that was until it hooked on its claw. The following electric charge pained and stunned it for a moment but its protective exoskeleton was hard enough to withstand and negate most of its effect. The moment the human had whirred back towards it, it was able to turn to the side to protect its eyes from the onslaught. Just as quickly before it could register what was happening, its tail was caught in the wire, putting pressure on where the string was wound upon and trapping it in place.

This was the time the second deathstalker, the bigger one, moved to charge. It could see in the dark and had studied the attack pattern of the human. It now knew what the string was for thus when it approached its brethren, it grabbed a hold of the string with its claw and whirled to pull the human towards the two and attempt to use its scorpion tail to strike him down.

The first deathstalker then used this opportunity to wait for the human's next move after the other deathstalker's strike to deliver its own follow-up tail strike.

"Seriously? Is this somekind of joke?" Kei grumbled to himself as the second Deathstalker made an appearance. As the Deathstalker pulled on the wire, there really wasn't much he could do. His equipment wasn't made for fighting Grimm afterall. As Kei got pulled, all he could do was roll over the tree branch to avoid being slammed by it.

Kei took the attack of Deathstalker 2 at an angle by twisting his body. By not taking the full force of it and by with the protection of his armor, Kei was able to avoid most of the damage. Using the momentum that carried him from Deathstalker 2 pulling on the wire, Kei pushed off its massive stinger after it had struck him, and flew right at the weakened Deathstalker. This would cause him to approach the first Deathstalker at a much faster speed then the was to be expected.

Kei sent electricity running through his hand, and struck the armored top of Deathstalker 1. Despite hitting the tough shell with his bare fist, his semblance would amplify his hit.

Ignoring the stinging sensation in his hand that came from hitting a hard surface, Kei jumped off of the head of Deathstalker 1, and attempted to land on Deathstalker 2. His priority now was to get the massive scorpion to let go of his wire. By holding onto the wire, Kei knew his movements were heavily restricted.

Landing on top of the Deathstalker 2, Kei made 3 rapid strikes to the joint of the claw that was holding his wire.

The first Deathstalker watched closely as its brethren successfully struck the unsuspecting human, ready to follow up with its own attack, only for its target to disappear from its vision in high-speed velocity towards it. Its tail was too slow to strike the human and its frame was too big for a complete evasion. The next thing it knew the human had landed on it, a strong punch followed by a burst of electricity and the weakened Deathstalker was no more. It collapsed on the ground and slowly dispersed in black ashes.

On the other hand, the bigger scorpion had almost forgotten it still had the string in its claw, intent on striking the human with its tail but its target was suddenly on its pincer joint, delivering a punch and then another one. Its claw fell limp causing the scorpion to rear back, losing the string in the process but then charged forward towards the human in an attempt to crush him beneath its enormous frame.

It's free! Kei thought thankfully as his the Deathstalker let go of the wire, which allowed the wire to completely retract into his belt.

Movements no longer restricted, Kei immediately went to put distance between himself and the Deathstalker, throwing one end of the wire to a sturdy branch in a tree behind, which the end of the wire wrapped around. Kei then used the secure wire to quickly propel himself up onto the tree branch, avoiding the Deathstalkers charge.

Suddenly, random movements caught his eye past the trees ahead of him in the ruins of the town. It was difficult to make out exactly who or what at this distance, but it appeared to be humans. There was two of them, both dressed in some kind of dark green outfit and appeared be carrying some kind of rifle. They were walking towards the area of the forest where Kei was. No doubt they had heard the commotion from him fighting the Deathstalkers. Though it wasn't for certain, Kei knew these men probably weren't hunters, this was far outside of normal hunting territory. No, rather it seemed the rumor he had heard was right. Exalted members were up to something out here.

Kei looked down at the Deathstalker. He had to hurry up and finish it off. If the Exalted members got here before the fight was finished, they would immediately spot Kei and would probably radio their allies in the ruined town of Kei's prescence. Knowing those from the Exalted, their method of solving a problem was to get rid of it altogether.

Kei let of the wire which hung loosely around the tree branch, which caused it to automatically retract into his belt. As he did, Kei fell forward from the treebranch, kicking off of the branch at the last second in order to propel himself at the remaining Deathstalker. Kei flipped his body around, landing a heel kick on top of the hard surface of the skull of the Deathstalker. Still carried by the momentum, charged forward striking an opening in the armor of the base the tail, sending electricity through his hand at this same moment. Spinning around, Kei grabbed both ends of his weighted wire with each hand, throwing one end to each of the joints on the arm of the Deathstalker that connected the claw to it. Both wires wrapped securely around each of the joint, and Kei pulled each of them, providing a choking/decapitation like effect on each of the Deathstalker's claws.

Having missed its charging attack, the Deathstalker scampered quick on its legs to locate and face the human for a follow up attack, only to receive a powerful blow to its head. The force was strong enough to make it almost collapse on the ground but it still held its ground. It turned from side to side to shake the human off its top but stopped its motion when a shock went through the exposed part of its tail. It was stunned and pained momentarily, unable to do anything as the wires coiled around its claws and receive a restricting force that ultimately snapped and detached its pincers from its body. With one last painful cry, the scorpion-like creature crashed onto the ground lifeless. Just like any other grimm, it faded away into black ashes, erasing evidence of its existence.

Kei sighed in relief as the Deathstalker began to fade away. He got up off of the Deathstalker and stretched his arms, as was his natural habit he had when defeating an enemy. His victory celebration was short lived however, and he suddenly heard voices behind him. The two he had spotted earlier were getting a lot closer than he had expected.

"I think it was over here somewhere." Said the first voice.
"Get ready, It might be a Grimm or something."

Kei quickly and dove behind a tree, using it to conceal his presence. Literally seconds later, two men walked into the small clearing where Kei had fought the Deathstalkers. They were both in dark green camos, but over this camo was also dark green plates of body armor that protected their chest, arms, and legs. On their head they wore a dark green combat helmet. Both of them carried black assault rifles they Kei didn't recognize. The rifles each had several attachments on it such as a bayonet, underbelly grenade launcher, a light, and others Kei couldn't fully make out. There was no doubt about it. These men were exactly who Kei thought they were. They were mercenaries of the Exalted.

"Hey look at that," One of the men spoke up, "Isn't that a Deathstalker? It looks like it had just been killed."
"You're right. Looks we're not alone out here." The other voice said, "Calling HQ; we seem to-"

It was at that moment Kei shot out of hiding, charging at the second voice. Kei knew he had made a mistake. The Deathstalker hadn't fully disintigrated fast enough. The Exalted mercs would of course see the body and know someone was in the area. Kei should have taken them out first thing, before they would have a chance to even begin to radio HQ.

Kei quickly closed the distance between himself and the mercenary on the radio, grabbing him by the neck and sending a pulse of electricity from his hand into the neck of the mercenary, enough to kill the average person. The merc let out an excruciating cry then his whole body fell limp, he was instantly killed.

The other mercenary raised his rifle and began firing on Kei. Kei used the dead merc as a body shield, putting the body between himself and rifle fire. Between the body sheild and his Kevlar lined trench coat, Kei was completely protected by the bullets. Kei shoved the dead body at the first merc and ducked to the left. The first Mercenary hesitated a bit as the body was pushed toward him, and in this moment, Kei pushed off of the ground, immediately getting within arms length of the first Mercenary.

First thing, Kei pushed the rifle barrel to the side to avoid be shot or stabbed by the bayonet. Grabbing the bottom barrel of the rifle with his right hand, Kei used his left hand to punch the man in the nose, momentarily stunning and blinding him. The mercanarcy grip on the rifle was loosed and Kei brought his left hand down on the stock of the rifle. Pushing down with his left and up with his right, Kei pried the rifle from the grip of the man and flipped the whole gun around. Then finally, with a single easy push, Kei brought the rifle bayonet right through the first mercenary jugular.

The mercenary fell to the ground, grabbing at his pierced neck, struggling to stay alive. It was futile though, a strike like that was a kill strike. The man wouldn't survive even a minute.

The two mercenaries taken care of, Kei turned his attention toward the radio the first one he had killed was carrying.
"This is HQ," A voice on the other side of the radio was saying, "Is anyone there? We aren't getting responses. I repeat, is anyone there? Backup is on the way. Report, your situation..."

More people were on their way and Kei knew now would probably be an appropriate time to leave. He didn't know exactly what they were up to, but at least he had confirmed that the Exalted were active. That was good enough for him.

Kei turned around to leave, but he was stopped in his tracks.  Blocking his way to leave, stood a cloaked figure standing at roughly seven feet tall. A hood covered his face and he wielded a massive scythe in one of his hands.

Still tired and out of breath from his previous fights, Kei reached down to grab the assault rifle of the dead mercenary at his feet. He had a bad feeling about this...

Kei took the first action, raising the rifle and began to unload the clip into the large Hooded figure. It was futile however, the hooded figure quickly twirled his sycthe, knocking aside the incoming bullets. As he did, the scythe wielder began to move in towards Kei with inhuman speeds. Within no time, Kei was quickly within the range of the massive scythe.

The hooded figure brought the scythe down on Kei. Kei raised the bayoneted rifle to block it, but it barely slowed the Scythe down. It tore right through the rifle, absolutly demolishing the gun. As Kei felt the gun beginning to crumple in his hands, he immediately ducked to the side to avoid being cut in two. Kei had no time to do much else though, the Hooded figure already had a powerful kick coming Kei's way. Kei raised his arms infront of his body to brace for the kick. It was a solid hit with power behind it that could have easily been mistaken for an Ursa's.

The kick sent Kei flying back into a tree. Despite his armor, Kei could feel a stinging sensation in his arms where the kick had impacted him. There was no doubt the single kick left him with serious bruises.

The moment Kei looked back up at the hooded figure, the hooded figure was already on him again. Once more, the larger man was bringing the massive scythe on Kei. Kei barely had time to roll to the side avoid the attack. The Scythe came down where Kei was a moment ago, tearing the tree into two. Had Kei been even a moment too slow, he'd have been dead.

Kei didn't even have time to think of anything else besides his current fight. It was too fast paced to do otherwise. Even just blinking at the wrong time could get him killed.

Before the Hooded figure could land another attack on Kei who was in a vulnerable position, Kei grabbed the end of his weighted wire and threw it at the ankle of the the Hood figure. The wrapped around the hooded figures left ankle securely and as it did, Kei pulled the wire, intending to catch the large man off balance and force him to the ground.

But as Kei pulled the wire, the hooded figure didn't budge. It was like he was cemented to the ground.
Is it his weight? Kei thought, but that was impossible. The hooded figure would have to be absurdly heavy for Kei to not have moved him even a single bit. It wasn't possible for a human to be that heavy...

The hooded figure grabbed Kei by the collar and lifted him so that the two were eye level. As the man lifted Kei, the wire around his ankle came loose and automatically retracted into his belt. Kei's feet were no longer touching the ground and the larger man had Kei suspended helplessly in the air by his collar. The larger man said nothing as he did. Despite being this close, Kei still couldn't make out the hooded figures face, the hood was still hiding his face. Kei saw an opening though, and his flew towards the opening in the hood and grabbed the larger mans skull. As he did, Kei sent sparks of electricity dancing through his finger tips directly into the skull of the hooded figure.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then out of nowhere, as if nothing had happened, The hooded figure brought his massive scythe around and struck Kei in the side, letting go of Kei as he did. The massive impact of the scythe sent Kei flying. Kei hit the ground, unable to catch himself and continued rolling for a bit. Kei came to a stop in front a steep hill.

Kei felt a sharp pain in his side and coughed up blood. Kei felt his side to determine the damage. The scythe hadn't managed to pierce his trench coat, but it left him with a couple of broken ribs. There was no doubt that things were not looking good for him.

Kei looked up to see through blurry vision that the hooded figure was slowly walking towards him.
Damn, not even a single break... Kei thought desperately as he struggled to get to his knees. The pain in his side felt like a knife and it made moving feel like he was wading through a pool of liquid lead. The hooded man was getting closer at a steady pace, clearly confident that Kei would soon end up dead on his scythe. Kei looked around quickly, looking for something, anything he could use to give him a few more seconds of fighting. Giving up now was basically the same as killing himself. Then suddenly, as he reached behind him, Kei felt something out of place. He didn't have to look at it to know what it was. It was the other rifle that was still intact the second mercenary was using.

Kei had no time to make a plan. The hooded figure was already on him, beginning to lift his scythe for an execution strike. Without hesitation, Kei whipped the rifle around, pulling the trigger to the grenade launcher at point blank range.

Kei's vision quickly erupted in red as the force of flames exploding sent him backwards, rolling down the steep hill. Kei came to stop as he painfully crashed into a tree. Looking back at where he fired the grenade launcher, he could see that the entire area was lit aflame. Fire burned the grass causing a dark smoke to cover the area. It seemed the grenade launcher was loaded with some kind of incendiary round, judging from all the fire that it had caused.

The hooded figure was standing in the middle of the flames. His cloak was burning, and it did, it exposed his body, revealing what it truly was. What it was, Kei had no idea. Only thing for certain, it was not human.

The cloak on the once hooded figure was now burning. Under the burning clothes, the figure of the larger man was revealed, revealing it was not man, or even human. It was a black skeletal frame. It stood unmoving, its clothes burning, staring down at Kei. Scythe in hand, the skeletal figure continued to stand on top of the hill. Kei couldn't determine what it was. It didn't to be a living thing, it didn't seem to be an android or anything. Just a skeletal figure.

Kei was caught off guard as the large skeletal figure turned away. He was expecting to come charging down the hill, finishing Kei off with it's massive scythe, not walking way as it just did. Kei wasn't sure why it had just left the battle like that. There had to be a reason, something he was missing. Lost in his thoughts, Kei coughed up more blood, the sharp pain in his side once again returning.

Later, Kei decided, I've got to get out of here. Just because the skeletal figure left, it doesn't mean more of the Exalted won't be trying to find me. I'm not in the shape for another fight.

Struggling to his feet, Kei began to make his way away from the Exalted base, putting as much distance between himself and them as he could. Each step flooded him with pain, but Kei knew sticking around would mean worse then just pain.

After traveling at slow pace on foot for a couple of hours, Kei decided he was probably safe. Using his scroll, Kei called an airship from the academy to come pick him up. His injuries brought up questions with those who picked him up, but Kei passed it off as a hunting injury. Mentioning what truly happened wouldn't benefit him.

Kei took it slow for the next few weeks, letting his injuries recover, and with the state of the art medical equipment provided by the academies, it wouldn't take long. In this time, Kei would improve his equipment and continued to look into cases involving the Exalted. His previous fight with them led Kei to realize he was going to be seriously out gunned if nothing changed...

Risa opened her eyes to the large skeletal figure wielding a massive scythe. The skeletal figure was frozen still. Burnt remains of a cloak were draped over its body. Risa sighed to herself. The guy in trench coat lucked out hard when he managed to get outside of the range of her semblance. It was a mind transfer ability. It allowed her to possess a nonliving human-like body up to a range of 300 meters. The skeletal figure that stood infront of her was her main target. The titanium build made it impervious to most attacks and its scythe was a weapon too big for the usage of man, but rather a monster. While possessing this titanium skeleton, she was a monster.

"Risa," A deep and collective voice behind her spoke, "We're done here. Time to head out."

Risa turned to see the voice originating from Volke. A tall, muscular man with short spikey hair, countless battle scars, a mechanical left hand replacing the one he lost in battle, a massive, seven foot sword strapped to his back, and multiple other smaller weapons strapped all over his body. Volke possessed the image of a combat hardened soldier. Behind Volke stood Max. Unlike Volke, Max was smaller and was still in his very late teens. He was also a fox fauness and was usually pretty quiet. Despite his appearance, Max was very capable in combat, just as Volke and Risa herself was. The three of them belonged to the group of officers that stood above the rest of members in Exalted. Coming from many different backgrounds, the officers were the strongest of fighters in the group. Some of them were world renown in terms of combat even before joining Exalted.

"Don't rush me." Risa told Volke solemnly, "I don't listen to you."
"Its not my order," Volke stated emotionless, "It's his.
Risa clicked her teeth.
"Fine," She said, "Give me 5 minutes."

They were done with the place afterall, there was no reason to stay any longer. It would be time to move onto the next stage of the plan soon...
